by alice.in.wonderland inwhat do you think: did god invent man or did man invent god?
http://evolutionofgod.net/about_book/ .
in the evolution of god, robert wright takes us on a sweeping journey through history, unveiling a discovery of crucial importance to the present moment: there is a pattern in the evolution of judaism, christianity, and islam, and a hidden code in their scriptures.

I am just now reading this book and wondered if anyone else on here had read it, hence landing on this highly volatile(!) thread - I am finding it HUGELY informative...can't believe I hadn't stumbled upon the book until now - 2 years after publication! Anyhow, currently on page 75 but would highly recommend to anyone remotely interested in the subject. Ziddina, did you ever read it? Would be interested in your comments...

An Old Argument.... does it hold water?
by AK - Jeff inestimates range from 4 million to 15 million children die from starvation each year on this planet.
that's between 500 and 1700 children a day, depending on what numbers you accept.
still, no matter which numbers you use, doesn't this make you arrive at one of the following conclusions?.

Back to the question:
Estimates range from 4 million to 15 million children die from starvation each year on this planet. That's between 500 and 1700 children a day,
depending on what numbers you accept. Still no matter what numbers you use, doesn't this make you arrive at one of the following conclusions?
Sorry, Jeff - from my perspective, your 3 choices represent NONE of the conclusions I reach based on your scenario.
I am a "believer", perhaps not a "Christian", although brought up as a JW. Do I have absolute proof God exists? That he is omnipotent? That he is all-seeing? That he is the Creator? NO. But I am prepared to live with doubt, minus your logical proofs for the duration as it is my belief that the absence of proof is not proof of absence.
I do sense an extreme new version of the 'us' vs. 'them' mentality in your tarring and feathering of all those who don't agree with one or other of your 3 choices. Lighten up a little!
And again, I keep this open mind and 'belief', if that is what you call it, not for some hope of reward, but because I have become more tolerant of possibilities (of every stripe) since leaving the Witnesses. All you cocksure scientists/literalists/may one day have to eat your words - better to leave your options open in my view and allow for a little of the mystic. My 2 cents plus.

d - you're entitled to your figments as I believe I am to mine.
Jeff, I'm not interested in saving myself. Every day I am on this earth is a GIFT and if it all ends at death, so be it. In the meantime, I am GRATEFUL to G-O-D, whatever figment of mine he/it happens to be, because I believe I am indebted to him/it/greater power for every breath I have so far been given. If I can give relief to one suffering creature on this earth in the time I am here, I believe I will have served my purpose. I, of course, don't speak for others, neither do I proselytize that mine is the only way. For sure I am not here to buy time in some future nirvana, and why you impute that motive to all believers is beyond me.

Ha ha undercover! "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." (don't know who said that, but that at least holds water!)

Your view? Please share. Try and stick to the point.
This is only my view -
The world is full of suffering - agreed. But it is also full of the overcoming of suffering. That, to me, is God.

The new writing department of the WTBTS
by Aussie Oz inthere is a new writing department in wt land.. us.. think about it, the watchtower/jehovah's witnesses are a reactive 'religion', not a proactive one.. that means of course that they react and modify doctrine, rules and direction in response to what ever may be effecting them.
probably the last time they were proactive was the 40s and 50s but these days its all about preservation rather than growth.. i am sure that the actual writing department have eyes and ears out in 'aposta land'.
after all, who discuss and disect the books, magazines and letters more than we do?
